About the club

Welcome to Pirates Rugby Club

Pirates RFC is the top open club based in Joburg and fields 5 sides in the GLRU Premier league. Bring the family and friends and come and support the lads.

Founded more than a century ago in 1888, Pirates Rugby Club is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Gauteng and is steeped in history.

Celebrating its 125th birthday in 2013, Pirates is a proud Club with a spirit not readily found in many Sporting Clubs. This is born out of our very large Old Boys section and large group of loyal supporters.

In 1952, after relocating several times within the central Johannesburg area, the club found a permanent home in Sir Lionel Phillips Park on the Greenside/Parkhurst border. This park was donated to the city by the Sir Lionel Phillips Trust, with the proviso that it may never be developed for any purposes other than civic sport.
